Royal Hospital Chelsea – Fully Fitted Residential Fire Sprinkler

Client

Wates Construction

Property Detail:

Founded in 1682 by King Charles and designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the Royal Hospital Chelsea provides accommodation and extra care homes for up to 300 former British soldiers. In 2011 major renovation works began within this Grade I listed property to modernise its living accommodation providing a more comfortable environment for its “Chelsea Pensioners.”

Ultrasafe Sprinkler Solution:

The multi-million pound renovation required an update in the buildings’ fire strategy. As an alternative to a fire curtain, a fully fitted residential fire sprinkler system was proposed and accepted by the client.  Through various consultations and meetings with the architect, building control and independent fire engineers, a full low flow stored pressure system was designed and incorporated into the extensive renovations. This system was seen by the architect as the most practical solution to storing water given the lack of space within the 17th century attic area.

Other residential properties in our portfolio include: 16 x Kent PFI Scheme independent living accommodation units, numerous private sheltered and extra care home units in East Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and recently Suffolk.
