Commercial fire sprinklers systems

Commercial sprinkler systems are vital safety features in commercial buildings. They consist of pressurised water pipes with strategically located sprinkler heads. These systems detect fire heat and release water promptly to suppress fires, minimising damage.

Since January 2016, it has been a mandatory requirement for all newly constructed and converted residential and commercial properties in Wales to incorporate an automatic sprinkler system. This stipulation is not required by law in England as yet but should be as good practice.

Here at Ultrasafe we have a dedicated team of designers and engineers proficient in providing sprinkler installations and maintenance services for both residential and commercial sprinkler systems. Our commitment is to guide you through every phase of your project, ensuring meticulous attention to detail from the initial site visit to the final certification and ongoing servicing.

Common types of commercial projects:

Office Buildings: From small office spaces to large corporate complexes, fire sprinkler systems are a standard feature in office buildings to ensure the safety of employees, visitors, and assets.

Retail Stores: Shopping centres, retail outlets, and supermarkets often install fire sprinkler systems to protect merchandise and customers from fire hazards.

Hotels and Hospitality: Hotels, resorts, and other hospitality establishments install fire sprinkler systems to safeguard guests, employees, and property.

Healthcare Facilities: Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities are equipped with fire sprinkler systems to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and medical equipment.

Educational Institutions: Schools, colleges, and universities install fire sprinkler systems to protect students, faculty, and educational facilities.

Industrial Facilities: Manufacturing plants, warehouses, and industrial complexes install fire sprinkler systems to protect personnel, machinery, and inventory from fire damage.

Components of Commercial Fire Sprinkler Systems:

  • Piping Network
  • Sprinkler Heads
  • Control Valve
  • Alarm System
  • Water Supply
  • Pressure Gauges and Alarms
  • Fire Department Connection (FDC)

    Types of Commercial Sprinkler Systems:

  • Wet Pipe Systems: The most common type, where water is constantly present in the piping network, ready to discharge immediately upon activation of a sprinkler head.
  • Dry Pipe Systems: Suitable for environments where freezing temperatures may be an issue. These systems contain pressurised air or nitrogen in the pipes, with water held back by a control valve. When a sprinkler head activates, the valve releases, allowing water to flow into the pipes and out of the activated sprinkler head.
  • Pre-action Systems: Similar to dry pipe systems, but the water is held back by an additional pre-action valve. These systems are used in areas where accidental activation of sprinkler heads could cause significant damage.
  • Deluge Systems: In these systems, all sprinkler heads are open, and water is released from all heads simultaneously when the system is activated. Deluge systems are typically used in high hazard areas or where rapid fire spread is a concern.
